| The Palm Sunday, a Sunday before Easter, is one of the Twelve Great feasts. On that day Jesus Christ solemnly entered Jerusalem to show he was ready to voluntarily take His death. People met Him, Who was riding on a donkey’s colt, as they would meet a victor king coming back after a military triumph – with the green palm branches in their hands, shouting «Hosanna!». But Christ knew those very people would repudiate Him. On this day all the Orthodox believers still greet Christ, as the Conqueror of death, with the palm branches in the East and with the branches of the pussy-willow in cold countries.
Hierodeacon German (Ryabtsev) performs 26 chants (among them are the Exaltation, «Glory, both now and ever», «Sitting on Thy throne in heaven») in Znamenny, Valaam and Common monodies, as well as in Znamenny and Valaam chants.
